Governance and Artificial Inteligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way governments operate, often in ways that impact daily life.
The OECD’s latest report, Governing with Artificial Intelligence, examines how public agencies are deploying AI, the benefits and risks involved, and the steps needed to ensure it serves the public good.
Governments Go Digital
Around the world, governments are utilising AI to streamline processes, personalise services, and enhance decision-making. From applying for permits online to receiving tailored health advice, intelligent systems are already making interactions with the state faster and more efficient. Beyond convenience, AI can also help uncover fraud and reduce human error, delivering savings in both time and money.
Why Trust and Safety Matter
However, the promise of AI comes with its own set of challenges. Systems trained on biased data can perpetuate unfairness, and opaque algorithms risk undermining accountability.
Overreliance on automation may erode the human touch in services where empathy is most crucial. Add to this outdated infrastructure, limited funding, and skill shortages, and it becomes clear why trust and transparency are essential for adoption.
The OECD’s Roadmap
The OECD highlights three priorities for responsible AI in government:
- Enablers: modern digital infrastructure and skilled people
- Guardrails: clear rules, oversight, and safeguards against misuse
- Engagement: ongoing dialogue with citizens and businesses to ensure AI reflects real needs
In practice, this means upgrading systems, investing in people, creating checks and balances, and ensuring the public’s voice is heard.
Real-World Results
Governments are already experimenting, from healthcare to tax administration, with early signs of improved efficiency and service quality. But most projects remain at the pilot stage. The OECD urges governments to lead boldly, ensuring AI not only enhances efficiency but also builds trust and delivers long-term public value.
The takeaway: AI can help governments work more efficiently and fairly, but only if trust, transparency, and accountability remain at the core of their operations.
