Tax and Growth
Tax is no longer a cost to be managed; it’s the steering wheel for growth.
BDO’s 2025 Tax Strategist Survey shows 9 out of 10 tax leaders now shape mission-critical decisions before they’re made.
That statistic stopped me scrolling, and the rest of the report is just as eye-opening. Here’s what matters to every CFO, CHRO and strategy lead looking for their next competitive edge:
Tax has entered the C-suite.
- M&A blueprints, supply-chain redesigns and digital investments are all vetted through a tax lens.
- Teams that position themselves as strategists are almost twice as likely to get the early invite compared with “tacticians.”
CFO sponsorship is the key
- 90% of survey respondents credit their finance chief for giving tax a louder voice and deeper access to cross-functional data.
- When the CFO champions tax, budgets grow for both talent and tech.
Policy volatility and growth ambitions result in double pressure.
- Two-thirds anticipate a bigger global tax bill in the next 12 months thanks to pending U.S. legislation and ever-shifting tariff regimes.
- Simultaneously, most are pursuing aggressive expansion—new products, new markets, and a fresh wave of M&A.
Technology adoption is soaring, but data remains the choke point.
- Nearly half have already rolled out AI or advanced analytics, yet 56% admit their data architecture can’t keep pace.
- 67% will boost tech spend this year, and 58% are earmarking more budget for up-skilling the humans behind the dashboards.
The emerging playbook for tax leaders:
- Craft a crisp “tax value narrative” that shows how effective tax posture accelerates growth, protects margins and boosts cash flow.
- Embed tax pros in supply-chain, finance and product teams before key milestones, not after.
- Build a single source of truth for tax data; partner closely with IT to automate ingestion, cleansing and real-time scenario modelling.
- Balance innovation with compliance excellence—credibility is the ticket to staying at the strategy table when regulations tighten.
